The Causes of Tooth Pain

Posted .

Tooth pain, also known as a toothache, is typically caused by issues within the teeth or jaws. The degree of pain can range from mild to severe, and treatments can be as simple as improving your oral hygiene routine or as complicated as oral surgery. To help you know the causes of tooth pain, our dentist, Dr. William Schell, is happy to share some information.

The first cause of tooth pain can be damage. This means a tooth chip or fracture can make the tooth hurt. A broken dental crown, dental filling, or other dental restoration can also cause pain. Lastly, having a simple piece of food lodged between the teeth and in the gums can also cause discomfort.

The second cause of tooth pain can be decay. Tooth decay, which is also known as a cavity, is a major cause of tooth pain. This is because the decay is damaging the enamel and likely the internal structures of the tooth. This makes the tooth very sensitive. Infection from the decay can also make the pain worse.

The third cause of tooth pain can be a disease. The disease could be gum disease or even oral cancer. Typically, gum disease would be the more common cause of the tooth pain because of the red, swollen, and infected gums.
