6 Tips for a Tooth-Healthy Holiday Season

Posted .

The holiday season is upon us! It’s easy to get caught up in the hullabaloo. Remember, however, to keep up with basic dental habits. Here are some things to remember as you care for your teeth this holiday season.

Brush: Make sure you brush your teeth for 2 minutes, twice a day. Just remember “2 by 2” and you’ll have it down. Brush the inside, outside, and chewing surfaces of each tooth.

Floss: Use an 18” piece of single-filament floss to clean between your teeth. Floss around each tooth; include behind the back molars.

Choose Good Tools: Use dental hygiene tools that have the ADA Seal of Acceptance on the package. This guarantees a quality product. Toothbrushes should be replaced every 3-4 months, or sooner if they become contaminated.

Chew Gum: It is a bad idea to brush right after eating, as the abrasive action can damage tooth enamel. To get your mouth clean after eating, chew a piece of ADA-approved sugar-free gum. This will stimulate saliva production and get your teeth ready for brushing.

Be Mindful of Sweets: When eating sweets, don’t snack on them over long periods of time. Eat a treat or two, then be done for a while. Drink lots of water to help wash away sugars and acids.

Visit Your Dentist: Visit your dentist soon! You don’t want cavities and other dental emergencies messing up your holiday plans. To schedule an appointment in Plano, Texas, call William W. Schell, DDS at 972-618-0084 today! Dr. William Schell and our team will be happy to help you.
